This week I was at the park with Martha and Rupert and a bunch of other mums and kids. Each of us teaching, coaching and guiding our children in the art of sharing, turn taking and kindness. At one point there were three of the toddlers taking it in turns to climb up the ladder and go down the big slide. Rather than rush off for another go as soon as they had reached the bottom, they would wait… Calling and encouraging the next person as they embarked on the long climb up and then would erupt with cheers as they came down. Faces full of pure pleasure that their friend had accomplished it. Bodies full of the excitement they were feeling as they did playground life together.
I have A LOT to learn from their displays of friendship.
What would a community that genuinely and extravagantly cheered each other on like this look like?
This is a thought that has consumed me since we launched IF: Chichester and held our first gathering in February. Women getting together for a weekend and it ending in actual cheers as each shared what their next step would be in light of what they had heard.
I have been lucky enough to have had my own personal cheerleaders journeying with me at various points of my life. Family and friends who believe the best, whose love and affection do not depend on an outcome, who consistently call me on to bigger and better things. Its at these times, surrounded by the safety of the love and belief of others, where I have been at my best.
But too often comparison and jealousy can stop me being that kind of cheer leader for others.
Hebrews 12v1 says,
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,”
What I see for this IF: Chichester community is women being surrounded by other women;
Cheering each other on.
Throwing off the comparison and jealousy (or whatever stops you) that entangles and running this race together as we learn how to encompass the greatest commandment and the great commission whilst becoming more of who God created us to be.
Whose with me because I want to assign myself as your new cheerleader 🙂
